DP | Differential Privacy |
DAS | Disclosure Avoidance System. A set of privacy-protection strategies, including DP, applied by the Census Bureau to its portfolio of data programs and products. |
Epsilon | A mathematical value for the total amount of privacy protection afforded to a database. The higher the value of epsion, the less privacy. Once determined, fractions of epsilon are then allocated to any and all tabulations of the data. |
Privacy loss budget | A term for the value and allocation of Epsilon across various geographic levels and population groups. The privacy loss budget must be determined through a deliberative policy process. |
the "Spine" | A hierarchy of geographic areas receiving allocations from the privacy loss budget. The nation is at the top of the spine, followed by states, counties, townships, etc. |
